After the coup d'etat in 2014, Thailand's education system saw several changes, particularly in terms of education policy and academic freedom. The military junta that took over the country implemented various measures that aimed to reform the education system and promote "Thainess" and patriotism.
One of the most significant changes was the shift towards a centralized education system, with the junta's National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) taking control of education policy. The NCPO's education policy focused on promoting nationalism and loyalty to the monarchy, as well as the suppression of critical thinking and dissent in schools.
The junta also cracked down on academic freedom, with several universities and academics facing censorship and disciplinary action for expressing opinions that were deemed critical of the regime. This resulted in self-censorship among academics, as well as a decline in academic quality and research output.
The preservation of basic rights, including the right to express opinions in educational institutions, was also compromised under the junta's rule. Students and teachers who spoke out against the regime faced intimidation, harassment, and even arrest, resulting in a climate of fear and self-censorship.
However, following the end of military rule in 2019, there have been some efforts to restore academic freedom and promote democratic values in education. The current government has pledged to revise education policy and promote critical thinking and independent inquiry in schools, as well as to protect academic freedom and freedom of expression.
Despite these efforts, however, there is still much work to be done to fully restore and protect academic freedom and democratic values in Thailand's education system. Ongoing political unrest and the threat of military intervention continue to pose challenges to the preservation of basic rights and academic freedom in the country.
