The Loop

The Loop is a literary speculative fiction novella told through dual perspectives: Luna Chen, a former quantitative analyst, and Maya, a ceramicist. The two women are contestants on a reality television program called The Horizon Protocol: Financial Endurance Series, in which one must spend an exponentially doubling sum of money each day while the other must invest every dollar she touches. Whoever accumulates greater net value at the end of thirty days wins; the loser is "reset" — returned to Day One with only fragments of memory.
What the show markets as competition is, in fact, a trap. Luna has lived through forty-seven loops. Maya, through a traumatic "merge" event in which their consciousnesses temporarily overlapped, has accumulated her own fractured memory of dozens of cycles. Together, they have developed a private language — a knock code, notes slid under doors, the slow grammar of trust built across iterations — and, eventually, a radical strategy: collapse the game's opposition by making Maya's mandatory spending feed directly into Luna's investment portfolio, turning adversarial design into a recursive, self-sustaining circuit.
Running beneath this financial architecture is a deeper story. Luna's wife, Dr. Vera Osei, is a neuroscientist who has been unknowingly funded by Luna across every loop — her company, Mnemosyne Therapeutics, researching the very mechanism that may free them. When Vera's trials produce an inexplicable result — a patient carrying distributed memories that are not their own — she follows the evidence to its source, and the loop, at last, ends.
