Seren grows up in a valley village that has given her few illusions. When catastrophe strikes — the river blackened, the harvest failed, fever spreading through the old and sick — she is the one who volunteers for the ancient rite. Pragmatically, almost matter-of-factly: her father will recover, her eight-year-old brother Davan will survive. She is the one whose loss the village can bear. She climbs the mountain expecting to die.
Instead, she meets Luneth.
The moon goddess is tall and pale and faintly displeased by the misunderstanding. The rite does not demand a life — it demands ten years of willing service. Seren agrees without hesitation, and is brought into a realm unlike anything she could have imagined: warm stone, silver gardens, a library of extraordinary depth, a sky that holds both living stars and the ghosts of dead ones. It is beautiful, and it is lonely, with the particular loneliness of immense duration — of a being who has outlasted every companion she has ever had and learned, over centuries, to require very little.
Seren does not let her require very little. The relationship that builds between them is gradual and earned: evenings in the library, long conversations about tides and extinct constellations and the mechanics of grief, small daily rituals that compound into intimacy over months and then years. Luneth begins to find reasons to seek Seren out. The silver flowers in the east corridor — the verath, those who find what is not yet lost — turn toward Luneth before she arrives. Neither of them names what is happening until the year is nearly gone, and then they name it honestly, in a room full of living tidal maps, and choose it with open eyes.
What distinguishes their love story is its full awareness of its own shape. They know from the beginning how it ends. They discuss it directly, negotiate around it, and refuse — in their better moments — to let the ending become the point. The novel's emotional architecture is built from these negotiations: Luneth learning, across years and considerable resistance, to receive care as well as give it; Seren learning to hold two irreconcilable truths at once — that this is the best years of her life, and that it costs her family something real; both of them choosing, repeatedly, not to make it small.
The novel's supporting figures deepen this world: Vael, Luneth's oldest servant, dry and quietly conspiring; Maret, an ancient being who arrives to tell Luneth she is constructing her attachment for maximum pain and is told, politely, to mind its own business; and Davan, seen only through a window at the one-year mark, running toward lunch, taller than Seren remembers — the cost of the bargain, made newly concrete.
The final chapters move through the accumulated texture of nine years: the archive, where Luneth has been annotating centuries of records in her own hand, adding who people actually were; the terrace, where they have watched stars and witnessed rites and learned each other's silences; the library window seat, with its permanent small blanket, where they sit on the last night without urgency, cataloguing what they are about to lose.
On the final morning, Luneth gives Seren a private book — all the small things, recorded so that forgetting them is harder. Then Seren is gone.
The novel closes with Luneth alone on the terrace, allowing the grief to be exactly as large as she always knew it would be — and then, when she is ready, going to write the annotation. What she will write is given to us. It is, like everything in the archive, love in a very long patience.
